With the successful application for the world heritage of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, many cities along the canal have launched a large number of landscape planning and design projects. At this stage, there are problems such as the same style of urban waterfront landscape planning and design,or the landscape characteristics are not prominent, and so on.The Grand Canal has a history of more than 2000 years, and the regional cultural characteristics of the cities along it are very distinct. How to express the regional culture in its river landscape design is one of the key issues in the planning and design of the river landscape of the Grand Canal(hereinafter referred to as the canal landscape). In the fisrt place of this paper,it is describes the development background of canal landscape planning and design, combined with the development of related domestic and foreign urban waterfront and regional culture related fields, through theoretical research, case study, summary and other methods to develop the research framework.Secondly, based on the general situation of the canal, this paper sums up the theoretical concepts of urban river landscape and regional culture from the perspective of the canal, providing theoretical basis for the subsequent practice. Then, through on-the-spot case study, through investigation of Hangzhou and Suzhou and Shanghai Huangpu River landscape planning and design with characteristic skyline significance, drawing on the outstanding features of the case, the actual case is used to support the subsequent practical planning and design. On this basis, summed up the principles of canal landscape planning and design, planning and design strategies. The construction of canal landscape from the perspective of regional culture can be divided into three levels:macro perspective, meso perspective and micro perspective. From the macro perspective, the general layout of the canal is discussed due to its linear and heritage characteristics;from the middle perspective, the waterfront parks along the canal are integrated with each other;from the micro perspective, the construction of each node is realized, and the regional cultural characteristics are embodied by using the landscape representation techniques such as abstraction, representation and symbols. Then, based on the combination of theory and practical cases, through the use of GIS to select and analyze the landscape points of urban characteristic skyline of Tongzhou,to analyze the skyline of canal waterfront landscape from the perspective of skyline showing regional characteristics;through the excavation of water culture, water transport culture, commercial culture, historical sites, handicrafts culture, celebrity culture and so on,and from the perspective of regional culture Tongzhou Canal in the macro sense of planning, and finally select the characteristics of cultural themes for detailed planning and design.
