Studies On Picturesque Landscape Garden Theory And Heritage Conservation In The UK

"Picturesque" is an aesthetic concept of painting originated from the 18 th century in the UK,and then evolved into a gardening method.From the middle and late 18 th century,it began to influence the gardening arts of France and Germany,and even influenced a kind of “picturesque” heritage protection view held by John Ruskin(1819-1900)in the 19 th century."Picturesque" is one of the most important aesthetic theories in Western art theory in the 18 th century.It is a very important concept in the history of 18th-century art and gardens in Britain and Europe.It has influenced British garden art for more than a century.However,the "picturesque" theory and garden practice are complex and influential relationship,and the "picturesque" concept itself is influenced by many other factors(such as landscape paintings,poetry,etc.),so the concept of "picturesque" is not a one-step theory,nor is it immutable,but formed gradually.Precisely speaking,after the 18 th century,the interpretation of "picturesque" concepts and theories are different in different periods,and correspondingly reflected in the practice of gardening.This article focuses on "picturesque",discusses the evolution of theory,influencing factors,gardening practices and design features,"picturesque" heritage protection perspective,and hopes to summarize the protection of such garden heritage in the UK,forming a method or model for reference.The "picturesque" garden research in this paper adopts the research methods of literature research,case analysis,comparative analysis,and summary,mainly from the following aspects.The introduction part of Chapter 1 mainly defines the research object and related concepts clearly,which is the basis of this thesis.First of all,"picturesque" and why the corresponding Chinese translation was chosen;secondly,why the naming of the picturesque landscape garden in the title is suitable for this research object andthe current discourse context of the research object was interpreted.Secondly,the background of this study was explained,that is,from the 18 th century,the British garden art began to gradually find its own position.The second chapter begins to study the germination and development of "pictureque" gardens.How the English people at that time started from the appearance of a new view of nature,visual experience,and the ideal landscape in landscape painting was showed in the section 1;and how landscape paintings and idyllic poetry interacted with and promoted the concept of "picturesque".was showed in the Section 2.The third chapter takes the early and the middle and late periods as the demarcation point,respectively researched the views of the theorists and the gardening practices of the gardeners,and summarized their representative views;finally summarized the artistic characteristics of "picturesque" gardens.The fourth chapter continues on the timeline.The "picturesque" viewpoint has affected the field of heritage protection.The aesthetic standards extended by the "picturesque" concept of gardens have had a profound impact on Europe and the world.Here comes a new aesthetic standard.Starting from rural monuments and farmhouses,this aesthetic standard has brought new thinking about the protection of monuments.This chapter studies the “picturesque” heritage protection perspective of the 19 th century.After finishing the relevant theories of "picturesque",the thesis in Chapter 5 is settled on the "picturesque" garden heritage.The protection of such historical gardens comes from its overall social participation model,protection institutions,and its advanced protection concept.Entering into policy,and taking specific protection measures taken by some garden heritages in order to restore their "picturesque" status of the eighteenth century as examples,followed by a summary of the protection experiences of such garden heritages.At last,the conclusion part summarized the theoretical context and corresponding practical aspects of the "picturesque" theory studied in this paper from germination to development and then to evolution,and pointed out the deficiencies of the study and points which need to be looked into in the future.
