As a navigation language in the road traffic system, the guide sign has the purpose of guiding the driver to reach the destination smoothly and complete the trip. The survey found that for the same road network structure, the layout design expressions of different cities are different. And even in the same city, the layout design expressions of the same network structure are different. These chaos in design greatly increases the difficulty for drivers to understand, leading to the false guidance, adding a lot of invalid traffic, and worsening the driving environment. In this paper the driver's cognition process of the city road signs, the classification of the urban road signs and the selection of the layouts information were introduced. The layout design ingredients of road signs such as service target, the quantity of information and layout expression form were analyzed. The layout design forms, and their positive points or existing problems of which as the representative selected samples of in-service road signs at home and abroad were compared and analyzed.Using the indoor static simulation test method, the comprehension experiment of the layout design of the guide sign at the intersection of urban roads was designed and carried out.Based on the experiment results the layout expression forms which has the high rate of driver's understanding and conformity with the road network was obtained and summarized. Finally,a layout design evaluation model based on the certainty factor was established. The analysis and calculation show that the model can be used to evaluate the pros and cons of the road sign layout at the intersection, and a judgment threshold is given.
