Urbanization has exacerbated the demand of urban land resources in China. After a large-scale and high-speed construction decade, the quantity of university campuses gradually became sufficient. The pursuit of university campus turns to high quality.Based on the idea of sustainable development, university campuses gradually change from a low-density extensive mode into an intensive development mode.Although more outdoor space has been attempted to be given during the increasing of space capacity of buildings in high-density and intensive development campus, the per capita external communication space area and its environmental quality are relatively reduced. The characters of location and openness of the external communication space can not be replaced. It is very important to manipulate the relationship between the external communication space and the architectural space in the intensive university campus.Study has been conducted mainly through case statistics, field research and literature analysis combined with practical experience. The intersection of the two main directions of intensive university campus and the external communication space of university campus has been focused on.Through design principles, design objectives, design strategies and other aspects, the design of the external communication space of the intensive university campus has been analyzed, providing a reference for similar projects. The meaning and scope of the external communication space of intensive universities are defined. That is,within the red line of the campus, the outdoor or semi-outdoor space that outside the building enclosures which are intentionally planned to undertake the communication behavior. The research basis and development process of domestic and abroad are summarized. The theory of intensive, the characteristics and spatial layout of intensive university campus are separated summarized. The outdoor behavior and psychological needs of the main users of the external communication space on campus are analyzed, clarifing its constituent elements and types, and summarizing the spatial factors and spatial levels related to communicative behavior.Based on data collections and case studies, the factors influencing the design of external communication space of intensive university campus, including natural environment, historical context, site selection and campus scale are studied. Thus design principles of integrity, intensification, openness and humanization should be followed according to the above studies.Based on the above research, main design problems of these cases, such as less space resources, limited environmental quality and scattered spatial distribution, have been found out.According to the existing problems,a series of design goals are put forward, which are from the overall intensification to the promotion of space vitality.Based on the design goals, typical cases of intensive university campus on the space design of external communication are further studies.Corresponding design strategies are put forward from four aspects: spatial layout, spatial three-dimensional,functional compounding and spatial environment optimization. In order to pursuit high efficiency and high quality of campus space in high-density environment, the campus space environment is created for students' study, life, communication and activity through the above four design strategies.Through a practical engineering case, the Guzhenkou Park of China University of Petroleum, the application of these design strategies have been examined. The results show that the design strategies of external communication space basically meets the design requirements of the practice of intensive university.Flexible combination of strategies can deal with related problems efficiently and pertinently in design projects.
