With the continuous and rapid economic development of China,it has become into one of the key challenges for China to coordinate social development, economic growth and energy utilization for accelerating the upgrade of its industrial system. As the base of the national economy, transportation plays a vital role in the social and economic progress. At the same time, especially the energy consumption of urban transportation continues to increase rapidly. Therefore,it is of great practical significance for both urban sustainable development of China and its energy security to scientifically analyze the main influencing factors of urban Transportation Energy Consumption(TEC),accurately predict the changing rules of urban TEC,and actively explore efficient ways of energy utilizations.20 representative cities in China have been selected for this research.Based on the Kuznets method proposed in econometrics, this research analyzes the specific influencing factors of urban TEC and the relationship between urban TEC and economic development by modeling work and case studies. In consideration of the differences between the standards of the transportation energy statistical data in China and those in other countries and regions, this study combines the energy consumptions of transportation operation sectors and private-car trips. In order to analyze the relationship between urban TEC and Gross Domestic Product(GDP)per capita, population density, economic structure, urbanization rate and TEC intensity, the multicollinearity test, panel cross-section dependence tests, panel unit root test and panel cointegration test are used to establish the environmental Kuznets curve theoretical econometric regression model, and the feasible generalized least square method is used to calibrate the model parameters.Based on the established model, this research has made case studies in comparison, and has also proposed corresponding measures for the energy saving. The results show that the relationship between GDP per capita and TEC per capita follows the trend of an inverted U-shaped curve, but the turning points of the environmental Kuznets curves are not reached in any cases. In other words, the economic development of China now cannot reduce its TEC per capita. At the same time, there is a weak decoupling correlation between TEC per capita and GDP per capita, and the elasticity of TEC per capita with respect to GDP per capita decreases with improving the economy. In addition, population density, economic structure and intensity of TEC have a negative effect on TEC per capita. In contrast, the urbanization rate has the largest and positive effect on TEC per capita. Finally, because urban development strategy ought to be consistent with urban economic and transportation development,it is necessary for China to both optimize its current urban spatial structure and make efforts to develop its sustainable energy technologies to improve the efficiency of transportation energy utilization. This paper contains 16 maps,18 tables and 71 references.
