Research On Decorative Arts Of The Ancestral Temple Architecture In Western Hunan

Under the influence of the background of multi-ethnic culture,the architectural decoration of ancestral temples in western Hunan shows us unique geographical characteristics,endowing those buildings with certain symbolic meanings,carrying the good wishes of people in western Hunan and embodying various image themes and essences of arts and crafts,and is the precious historical and cultural heritage.The research on the architectural decoration arts of ancestral temples in western Hunan is conducive to enhancing the traditional cultural knowledge of western Hunan as well as strengthening the protection consciousness of ancestral buildings in western Hunan.Meanwhile,it also provides theoretical and technical support for the diversification of contemporary design.This thesis is divided into five parts.The first chapter mainly introduces the origin of the subject and the purpose,the significance and the methods of the research.In this chapter,it also sums up experience and deficiencies through sorting out the literature related to the architectural decoration of ancestral temples at the present stage.The second chapter respectively analyzes the development history of both the folk culture and the ancestral temples in western Hunan: the development history of the folk culture is mainly elaborated from three aspects,including ancestral worship,totem worship and prevailing of witchcraft,while the development history of the ancestral temples in western Hunan mainly consists of four stages,rising,prosperity,declining and revival included.The third chapter,together with the fourth chapter,analyzes the constituent elements,image themes,construction arts and crafts,expression techniques and color rendering of the architectural decoration of ancestral temples in western Hunan.Through multiple field investigations on ancestral temples in western Hunan,a large number of first-hand image data are collected and further explored with the method of image,and then the artistic features of the architectural decoration of ancestral temples in western Hunan can be thus summarized.As for the architectural decoration of ancestral temples in western Hunan,wooden decoration,doors and windows decoration,roof decoration,wall decoration and stone decoration are the main constituent elements.As for the images,four kinds of themes are mainly contained,such as plants,animals,characters and geometries.All are artistically expressed with five kinds of techniques which consist of texts,marks,homonyms,implied meanings and symbols,demonstrating two styles and tones,i.e.,gray and red.In the fifth chapter,multiple instances of ancestral temples in western Hunan are studied so as to find out the existing problems in the architectural decoration of ancestral temples and successively put forward some strategies concerning protection and inheritance.This thesis mainly analyzes the architectural decoration of ancestral temples in western Hunan by using the method of image,explores its external artistic features and internal symbolic meanings,discusses the existing problems at the present stage so as to formulate corresponding way of protection,and finally concludes the strategies of inheritance towards the architectural decoration arts of ancestral temples in western Hunan,including the inheritance of construction arts and crafts,the use of subject matters and the regeneration of image symbols.
