Along with the transformation of urban construction in our country, the development of cities has gradually shifted from fast incremental expansion to refined development based on the stock. In the rapid development of urban transformation, old residential communities in the cities have faced the increasingly outstanding contradiction between the increasing domestic demand and the low environmental quality. Therefore, renovation of old residential communities has become one key aspect of the refined development of cities.During the upgrading and renovation of old residential communities, some were still in the primary stages including site clearing and exterior wall retrofitting while some mature ones have already tried environmental regulation on the level of micro updates of space. However, detailed observation of residents’ everyday life in old communities and research and design updates sharing intrinsic relationships therewith were still in their infancy.Among others, the effective and reasonable use of fragmented spaces,i.e.the scattered spaces, distributed in different areas of old communities has become an important issue to be addressed to enhance the quality of public space in old communities as well as the quality of life of the residents there. The increasing demand of people’s daily life has resulted in constant overflow of residents’ everyday life and ceaseless association with scattered spaces in old communities.Everyday behavior in scattered spaces continued to occur in a spontaneous state, whose universality has gradually had residents inured. Moreover, rich information contained in scattered spaces was not paid with enough attention or brought out to the fullest extent in the updating and renovation projects. This paper turns the perspective of research back to everyday life and focuses on residents’ actual demand for space in their life starting from the details.Firstly, the author summarized the preparatory study on scattered spaces in Nanjing Wangfuyuan Community, learning about the distribution and classification of scattered spaces as well as residents’ everyday needs of the scattered spaces and activities therein from results of the study.Secondly,in this paper, the author tried to explore the everyday characteristics of scattered spaces in old communities from three everyday perspectives, namely difference, convergence and coupling. After that, based on the study of everyday characteristics, the author systematically classified and evaluated scattered spaces in residential communities on the whole and, referring to studies on related successful cases at home and abroad, developed multi-dimensional updating modes and design strategies for scattered spaces in old communities. In the end, with Wangfuyuan Community,an old residential community in Nanjing as an example, the author proposed updating principles and optimizing strategies for renovation of scattered spaces therein, reconstructed such spaces from the perspective of everyday life and re-designed the arrangement of nodes, improvement of functions, scale division, scenario reproduction, complement of facilities and other aspects of the space as a whole.
