With the development of Chinese economy has entered into the new normal,it has become an urgent task to foster new growth drivers. Both the government economic conference and the intensive urban planning documents emphasize the development of advanced manufacturing and modern service industries. The modern service industry is mainly based on the producer services industry, which owns the advantage of a high degree of innovation and a deep degree of industries relevance. It is clear that the trend of cooperation between modern services and manufacturing industry has become more and more significant.Based on Marshall industrial zone theory, regional innovation theory and porter value chain theory, this paper discusses the influence mechanism of the co-agglomeration of manufacturing and producer services industry on energy efficiency, including professional division of labor, technological innovation and upgrading of value chain.Taking 3 of the most representative economic circles,Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei,Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta,as research objects, this paper uses the panel data during 2003-2016 to study the relationship between the co-agglomeration and energy efficiency.Firstly, the industrial co-agglomeration index is used to measure the co-agglomeration level of the three major economic circles. Then, the Super-Efficient SBM model which takes undesired output into consideration is used to measure the static energy efficiency, while the Malmquist-Luenberger index is selected to analyze the dynamic process of energy efficiency. Finally, the panel threshold model is built to test the relationship between co-agglomeration of manufacturing and producer services industry and static energy efficiency, which takes government intervention, openness, city scale, human resources and per capital as threshold variables. In addition, this paper makes a regression analysis of 6 subsectors of producer services industry separately to observe their heterogeneity. The following conclusions are drawn:(1)There is a nonlinear relationship between the co-agglomeration of manufacturing and producer services industry and energy efficiency, where the industrial heterogeneity exists.(2)With government expenditure as the threshold variable, after crossing threshold value(7.75%),industrial co-agglomeration has played a significant role in promoting regional energy efficiency.(3)Taking the openness as the threshold variable, after crossing threshold value(0.94%),the effect of industrial co-agglomeration on regional energy efficiency is from negative to positive under the 1% significance level.(4)Taking the city scale as the threshold variable, when the total population of a city at the end of the year is less than 282.51 ten thousand, industrial co-agglomeration significantly improves the energy efficiency.(5)When human resources and per capital are used as the threshold variables, there is no threshold effect on industrial co-agglomeration and energy efficiency.
