The country is people-oriented,the people take food as the sky,and the earth as the mother of grain.Sustainable utilization of cultivated land is related to national food security,long-term livelihood of farmers, and is an important material basis and space carrier for promoting ecological civilization construction and coordinating social and economic development.40 years of reform and opening up,the phenomena of arable land non-farming,non-point source pollution aggravating, arable land quality deteriorating, agricultural carbon emissions increasing sharply, and extensive and inefficient land use are becoming more and more serious, which leads to the low efficiency of arable land use in China and seriously restricts the sustainable development of agricultural economy. The middle reaches of the Yangtze River is an important production base of grain production in China and a key area to ensure food security. Therefore, scientific research on the utilization efficiency of cultivated land and optimizing the allocation efficiency of cultivated land resources are urgent needs for ensuring food security, social stability and sustainable agricultural development in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. This study takes 28 typical cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River as the research object.Firstly, considering the factors of unexpected output, the input-output index of cultivated land use is selected to construct the efficiency evaluation system. Then, the temporal and spatial characteristics of cultivated land use efficiency in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River from 2005 to 2016 are analyzed by SBM-Undesirable model.Secondly, the beta convergence model is used to explore the evolution characteristics of cultivated land use efficiency in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Finally, the Tobit panel data model is used to determine the direction and degree of each factor according to the regression coefficient and its significance, and the empirical analysis of the impact mechanism of cultivated land use efficiency in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is carried out.Through the research, the following conclusions are drawn.(1)From the time dimension, the overall efficiency of cultivated land use in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is not high. From 2005 to 2016,the efficiency value increasedfrom 0.3627 to 0.6845,with a growth rate of 88.95% and an average annual growth rate of6.56%.(2)From the spatial dimension, the change trend of cultivated land use efficiency in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River from 2005 to 2016 is quite different, and the spatial connectivity gradually strengthens, showing a trend of expansion from both sides to the middle.Among them, the number of inefficient municipalities gradually decreases, the spatial location of more efficient municipalities constantly changes, the number of municipalities shows a decreasing trend after increasing, and the number of efficient municipalities gradually increases.(3)From the convergence analysis, the overall cultivated land use efficiency in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River continued to grow steadily from 2005 to 2016.The growth rate of cultivated land use efficiency in the cities on both sides was faster than that in the central cities, and the difference of cultivated land use efficiency among the cities gradually narrowed down, and eventually showed a convergence trend.(4)According to the analysis of influencing factors, the average sowing area per worker, the total power of agricultural machinery per unit cultivated land area, the multiple cropping index and the per capita net income of rural residents have significant positive effects on the utilization efficiency of cultivated land in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and the order of influencing degree is the per capita sowing area per worker, the per capita net income of rural residents, the per capita multiple cropping index, and the total power of agricultural machinery per unit cultivated land area. The intensity of fertilizer use and per capita GDP have negative effects on the utilization efficiency of cultivated land in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.Fertilizer use intensity has Negative effects on the utilization efficiency of cultivated land in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River...
