Objective To investigate the value of DNA image cytometry(DNA-ICM)in diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion. Methods All 122 samples of pleural effusions were stained by Pap staining for liquid-based cytology, and with Feulgen method for detection of DNA image cytometry. Results Clinically or pathologically,56 samples were diagnosis as malignant and the other 66 as benign. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value of liquid-based cytology were 82.14%,98.48%,97.87%,86.67%.However the results of DNA image cytometry were 80.36%,90.91%,88.24%,84.51%.The liquid-based cytology andDNA image cytometry show no statistical significance(P=1.0).Conclusion The DNA image cytometry maybe a sensitivity method in diagnose of the malignant pleural effusions, and has a hope to be a biomarker for distinguish the malignant pleural effusions.
