Objective: To observe changes in cognition in symptomatic epileptic patients before and after receiving single-agent sodium valproate treatment using Event related potential(ERP)-P300 and Montreal Cognitive Assessment(Mo CA),and to evaluate the clinical application value of P300 and Mo CA in cognition chan ges in epileptic patients. Methods: 30 healthy people who took part in physical examination in outpatient department(control group)and another 30 symptomatic epileptics who were first diagnosed with symptomatic epilepsy from neurology ward and outpatient department of Anqing Hospital Affiliated to Anhui Medical University(study group)were enrolled in the study.Patients in the study group were orally treated with single-agent sodium valproate. The ERP P300 and Mo CA were examined in both groups before and3 months and 6 months after treatment. And also,Related factor including gender, age, education, smoking, drinking, sleep were also evaluated,SPSS18.0 statistical software were used, each group results were compared by T test.counting data.were compared by chi-square test. Results: The Mo CA score in the study group before treatment was(26.00±1.17),and(28.60±1.33)in the control group. The Mo CA score in the study group before treatment was lower than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01).The P300 latency was(424.03±45.98)ms in the study group and(319.83±12.70)ms in the control group before treatment. The P300 latency in the study group was longer than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01).After 3 months of sodium valproate monotherapy, the MOCA score in the study group was(26.40±1.17),which was not significantly different from that before treatment(P>0.05);the P300 latency in the study group was(397.87±42.87)ms,which is statistically different from that before treatment(P<0.05).After 6 months of sodium valproate monotherapy, the MOCA score in the study group was(27.33±1.03),which was statistically significant(P<0.01)from that before treatment. The P300 latency in the study group was(367.50±33.80)ms,which was statistically significantly different from that before treatment(P<0.01).The P300 incubation period of the experimental group was(367.50±33.80)ms,which was statistically significant(P<0.01).There is no statistically significant change in P300 amplitude in both groups before and after treatment(P>0.05).Conclusion : Patients with symptomatic epilepsy have cognitive dysfunction, oral administration of sodium valproate can improve cognition, and P300 latency can reflect short-term cognitive function changes in patients with epilepsy earlier than Mo CA.ERP P300 is more sensitive and objective than Mo CA.ERP P300 can reflect the effect of antiepileptic drugs on cognition changes at an early stage,so as to achieve early detection and early intervention.
