Objective: To explore the relationship between triglyceride and high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio(TG/HDL-C)and metabolic syndrome(MS)in adolescents in Northeast China. Methods: From December 2010 to January 2011,a stratified cluster random sampling method was used to draw a total of 935 subjects(aged 11 to 16 years)from senior and junior high schools in Liaoyang, northeast China.Physical examinations were performed and indicators related to glucose and lipid metabolism were collected.Five years later,93 of them who agreed were followed up.Results: Our subjects were divided into four groups according to the TG/ HDL-C quartile threshold from low to high(group Q4 has the highest TG/ HDL-C level). The simple index TG/HDL-C is positively correlated with body mass index,waist-hip ratio,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, uric acid, homeostasis model insulin resistance index(HOMA-IR),islet ? cell function index, and corrected insulin response. The insulin sensitivity index was negatively correlated. After adjusting for age, gender, and HOMA-IR and compared with Q1,TG/HDL-C in Q4 is an independent risk factor for MS(OR = 23.36,95% CI 6.96~78.44),and it is also an independent risk factor for central obesity in its components(OR = 4.02,95% CI 2.34~6.91).The ROC curve shows that the area under the curve is 0.841.At the critical point of 1.124,the sensitivity is 0.857 and the specificity is 0.721.Baseline TG/HDL-C was positively correlated with follow-up triglycerides and HOMAIR,and negatively correlated with HDL-C.When compared with subjects from group Q1(named Q1-F),subjects from group Q4(Q1-F)had higher TG/ HDL-C level at baseline, also higher prevalence of MS in follow-up(OR=11.65,95% CI 1.30~104.74)and overweight/obesity in follow-up(OR=4.32,95% CI: 1.28~14.62).Conclusion: TG/HDL-C is closely related to MS in adolescents in northeast China. At the same time, baseline TG/ HDL-C was a predictor of MS and overweight/obesity in early adulthood.
