| Objective To observe the effect on the nasal symptoms and signs of patients with allergic rhinitis(AR)and on the nasal function of normal young people, when use low intensity focused ultrasound(LIFU)stimulate the sphenopalatine ganglion(SPG).Method This study is divided into two parts.Part one:40 normal young people were recruited to have LIFU stimulation in the lower depression of the connection of bilateral zygomatic arch and maxillary coronoid process for 5 minutes each, once every other day, four times of ultrasound stimulation in total, and the combination of the frequency of each ultrasound stimulation and the effective acoustic radiation area was different, while the other parameters were the same. The symptoms and corresponding quantity in each stimulation mode during the test were recorded, from which the mode with the largest number of cases of increased nasal ventilation was selected as the ultrasonic treatment parameters of the patients with subsequent stimulation of allergic rhinitis.Part two:84 patients with allergic rhinitis were stimulated with LIFU at the same position. The parameters of ultrasound stimulation were fixed, once every other day,5 minutes on both sides,4 times in total.Observe the changes of nasal ventilation during the treatment, and record the visual analog scale before each treatment.VAS scores of subjective symptoms(stuffy nose, itchy nose, runny nose, sneeze),physical sign scores and rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire scores were compared before and after treatment to determine the immediate effect. Results In the first part, when the normal young people were stimulated by ultrasound, the symptoms of the same side maxillary toothache and nasal distention were the most prominent. There were significant differences in the proportion of toothache in the same side(P<0.05)and the proportion of nasal distention in the four stimulation modes(P<0.05).Under the stimulation of ultrasonic frequency of 1MHz and effective acoustic radiation area of 5cm~2,the number of normal young people with increased nasal ventilation was more than that of other modes(P<0.05),so the difference was statistically significant. The second part:the VAS score of nasal obstruction in patients with allergic rhinitis decreased with the increase of treatment times(P<0.05),so the difference was statistically significant. After ultrasound stimulation, more than80%of the patients could improve the function of immediate nasal ventilation. There was no significant difference in the number of patients with increased immediate nasal ventilation and no change in nasal ventilation after four times of stimulation(P>0.05).After treatment, the VAS scores of subjective symptoms(congestion, itching, runny nose, sneezing)were lower than those before treatment(P<0.05),so the difference was statistically significant. After treatment, the score of nasal physical signs was lower than that before treatment(P<0.05),so the difference was statistically significant. After treatment,Scores of each items and total scores of RQLQ were lower than that before treatment(P<0.05),so the difference was statistically significant. At the end of the treatment, the curative effect was evaluated in 84 cases,16 cases were markedly effective,60 cases were effective,8 cases were ineffective, the total effective rate was 90.48%.Conclusion When low intensity focused ultrasound is used to stimulate the sphenopalatine ganglion on the body surface with proper parameters,it can improve the sense of nasal ventilation of normal young people. It also can improve the subjective symptoms and signs of the nose of the patients with allergic rhinitis, and improve the quality of life of the patients. Its immediate and short-term effect have been better proved in this experiment. The therapy is easy to operate, safe and noninvasive, without obvious adverse reactions. Therefore,it can be used to treat allergic rhinitis as an novative therapy. |
