Background and Objectives Breast cancer is the most common malignancy for women, posing a threat to women's health. Thanks to the great progress of various treatment, the survival of patients with breast cancer has improved greatly in recent decades. We aimed to access the trends about the incidence and relative survival of female breast cancer from 1981-2010,according to the Surveillance,Epidemiology, and End Results(SEER)database. Methods To evaluate treatment outcomes of breast cancer patients, the SEER database was used to identify the cohort of women for this study. We analyzed data of female breast cancer patients ages over 20 years old from 1981 to 2010.Male breast cancer were excluded in this study. All the patients were divided into different subgroups according to age,and race.Kaplan-meier curves and the log-rank test were used to compare the relative survival rate between different subgroups. Results A total of 503,029 women was included after filtering the data in SEER database. The incidence of breast cancer increased mostly in the second decade, and then decreased in 2000-2010,from 170.9 to 189.1 to 181.0 per 100,000,respectively.The white women had a higher incidence than the black women(176.8 vs.151.3 in 1981–1990,196.3 vs.172.6 in 1991–2000,and 187.8 vs.173.9 in 2001–2010).A sustained improvement in relative survival of breast cancer from 1981 to 2010 were observed in this study. The 5-year survival rates improved over the past 30 years with incremental increases from 80.6% to 87.5% to 90.4%,respectively(p<0.0001).Patients aged 20-39 years old had the worst prognosis. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis(Fig.3)further confirmed that the survival rates of white women were higher than that of black women. Conclusions The incidence of female breast cancer patients in 1991-2000 is the highest in the last thirty years, then came to a downward trend. The relative survival rate of all ages and races subgroups were obviously improved over time. The trend and the difference between races were attributed to screening,HRT use,the progress of the treatment of breast cancer and so on.
