As inter-language communication of culture, translation not only means the simple shifts among languages, but is also limited by complex elements. The issue that translation theory and practice concern is how to achieve the "equivalence"between the source text and target text.Among the western translation theories, the translation shifts put forward by Catford has a huge influence.Based on the linguistic system, this theory analyzes the different levels of translation equivalence and the main types of translation shifts, which gives a positive instruction in translation from the microcosmic point of view.Under the guidance of specific translation types from "Translation Shifts",this report analyzes the examples of the English-Chinese translation of Everyone Eats:Understanding Food and Culture. The four translation shift types of structure, category, unit and system are discussed with the reference to the translation of the source text, which evokes the reflection and summary of the related translation strategy. The translation shifts theory provides translators with detailed strategies of words and sentences, however it neglects the coherence of the whole passage and the translation standards.
