A Study On The Society Of Border Area In Western Yunnan During The Republic Of China Era

Western Yunnan generally means the large area in western Yunnan province.But in this thesis it represents the border area in western Yunnan,especially the most west region.Those border areas governed by Nandian,Longchuan,Ganya,Mengmao,Mangshi,Zhaida,Zhefang,Husa,Lasa and Mengban Tusi,which covers the Tenglong border area during the Republic of China era,are frontier regions of Tengchong and Longling.Several conflicts happened one after another such as Majiali Event,Pianma Event and Jiangxinpo Event,deteriorating the frontier crisis.Located at the most west area in Yunnan,Western Yunnan has 7 of its 10 Tusi land adjacent to Burma,which is the first defense line of southwest border and of great importance to national defense.Effective governance to this area is especially crucial.To deal with frontier crisis,local governments,social groups and many people with lofty ideas went to frontier areas to handle crisis through frontier researches and put forward plans and measures to develop frontier areas.This thesis takes western Yunnan as research subject,using research materials as main basis,to systematically analyze situations in that area and make comments based on the analysis.This thesis contains Five chapters.Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction to Western Yunnan's geography,population,ethnic groups and reforms.Chapter 2 involves the politics in border areas.In the Republic of China era,there are Tusi system,Shanguan system and Liuguan system.Chapter 3 is about the economy in border regions,mainly analyzing the land problems,production technology,economic burdens and religions.Chapter 4 introduces social life.As minority groups aggregate in Western Yunnan,social life can be reflected though their basic necessities of life.With the former four chapters as foundation,Chapter 5 comments the society and summarize its characteristics in Western Yunnan during Republic of China era.Measures taken to govern border regions are also discussed from many aspects.Doing research on the society of border area in Western Yunnan can have Chinese people understand this area in a profound way;meanwhile,through its social conditions and measures taken,it can provide experience for governing border regions nowadays.
