Report On Novel Translation Of Mike And Psmith From The Perspective Of Catford's Translation Shift Theory

This is a report on the translation of the novel Mike and Psmith,from chapter 1 to chapter 6.As the early work of P.G Wodehouse who is famous for his humorous writing style,the novel Mike and Psmith is about the life of the middle school students in the UK before the World War?.It is difficult for the author without any experience in English-speaking areas to do the translation.For one reason the words in the book are really authentic;for another,there are huge difference between Chinese and English.So the translator need to adopt some strategies to make the translation conform to the expression rules of target language.In this translation practice,the author takes the Catford's Translation Shift Theory as guiding theory.Because of the difference between English and Chinese,translator usually need to deviate from the original form for more clear and coherent translation.And the Catford's Translation Shift Theory reasonably explains the actual shifts happen in the process of mutual translation of two different languages with the theory of level shifts and category shifts.And the category shifts include structure shifts,class shifts,unit shifts and intra-system shifts.The theory play an important role in dealing with shifts of syntax,grammar and semantics in two kinds of text.It offer great help to settle the problems caused by the differences between English and Chinese.The report includes six parts.The first part is about task detail,expounding the background and the meaning of the task.The second part is about task process,including the preparation before translating,the process of translating and the proofreading after translating.The third part is about literature review,concluding some relevant study results.The forth part is about the introduction of the Catford's Translation Shift Theory,expatiating its content.The fifth part is about the cases' study with the guidance of the Catford's Translation Shift Theory,illustrating the effect with examples of level shifts and category shifts.The last part is about the practice conclusion,concluding the practice and explaining the shortage of the report.The report aims to deal with the translation problems caused by the differences between English and Chinese,from various levels like syntax,grammar or semantics with the guidance of the Catford's Translation Shift Theory,so that the translation will be more clear and coherent.
