A Study Of An Interpretation Experience In The Ministry Of Agriculture Based On The UMEER Framework

This thesis studies two lectures that I interpreted during my internship for the Seminar on Land Management for the Belt and Road Countries at the Center of International Cooperation Service,Ministry of Agriculture from 5 to 27 July 2017.It consists of three major parts:preparation,interpretation and reflection on my work.The framework of Understanding,Memorizing,Expression and Emergency Response(UMEER)proposed by Li Chuangshuan is used to analyze my performance and propose ways of improvement.Based on the analysis,the author finds that interpreters need to improve listening and domain knowledge for better understanding.They need to follow speakers' logic and take notes for short-term memory.Interpreters need to re-express the author's ideas using their own words.Interpreters also need to use preventive and coping strategies to deal with crises.Interpreters should ask for conference materials in advance,communicate with speakers to prepare for the possible accent,and confirm with speakers on potential changes to the prepared presentation.Even if interpreters receive materials in advance,they must not take it lightly.They must study materials and prepare a glossary for quick reference on site.The interpreters must also be mentally prepared,always ready to take notes and deal with various emergencies.This study helps improve the author's own interpreting skills,provides reference for writing similar reports and offer insights into internship at Ministry of Agriculture.
