ON The E-C Translation Of NBA News From The Perspective Of The Linguistic Adaptation Theory

NBA(National Basketball Association),the world's highest level of professional basketball league,has an extensive market in China with lots of fans.The translation work is significant for the fans to get NBA information.Yet the related research on the translation of NBA news is rare,and therefore the author chooses it as the subject of her research.The author of this thesis translated 14 pieces of English news from the NBA official website NBA.com into Chinese.Then,based on the Linguistic Adaptation Theory,the author analyzes the difficulties in the translation of NBA English news and concludes effective translation strategies.Based on the typical case studies,the author of this thesis pays great attention to linguistic and cultural differences,explores the E-C translation skills of NBA news at the lexical,syntactic and language style level,to achieve the dynamic adaptability between culture,context,the cognitive style of the target readers and the linguistic structure.First,this thesis analyzes the translation of words in NBA news.Writers of NBA news tend to use short words,numbers,basketball terms and nonce words.Therefore,the translators can adopt the translation skills like the method of "extension","explanation","unpacking","adding","sports terminology standardization" and "using Four-Character".Second,this thesis discusses the translation of NBA news at the syntactic level.NBA news possesses some syntactic features.The English writers prefer to use highly extended simple sentences which contain a large amount of information,and use active voice and a series of verbs to emphasize the players,contributions and the intensity of the competition.Accordingly,the translators can choose to adopt the method of "adverse translation","linear translation","reconstructing translation",and "using 'bamboo'short sentences".Lastly,this thesis expounds the translation of NBA news from the angle of language style.NBA news is a kind of entertainment news.The correspondents of NBA news write in various language styles to attract readers,which pose great challenges for the translators.While translating,the translators should pay attention to the cultural and cognitive context of Chinese readers.They can use literal translation to deal with allusions and similes to retain faithfulness,and adopt free translation to deal with metaphors.What's more,the translator can adopt the translation skills like "adding background information","using puns" and "borrowing Chinese sayings" to transmit the original information accurately.All in all,the Linguistic Adaption Theory can play a guiding role in the understanding of the original context and the translation of NBA news.The translators should choose proper translation skills to achieve effective translation.The author hopes that this thesis can be helpful for the further study of the translation of NBA news.
