The Study On The Pattern Of Hindrance Of Love In Caizi Jiaren Novel(The Romances Of Talented Scholars And Beauties) In The Period From Late Ming Dynasty To Early Qing Dynasty

Caizi Jiaren(Caizi,talented scholars;Jiaren,beautiful ladies)novel in the period from the late Ming dynasty to the early Qing dynasty is one of the worth noting phenomenon in history of Chinese literature,which has been criticized for its cliche plots and stereotype tendency of composition.However,Caizi Jiaren novel was a special product of the time of late Ming dynasty when social ideology trend was changing and commodity economy just appeared.As an emerging type of commercial novel,its value and meaning requires to be reviewed from a new angle.This dissertation will discuss and comment the composition pattern of this type of novel.The well acknowledged typical plots of Caizi Jiaren includes falling in love on the first sight,exchanging letters and poetry,torn apart by overwhelming obstacles,Caizi passing the national exam for government officers,and then the reunion of Caizi and Jiaren.Among these plots,this dissertation will focus on the most important part,Caizi and Jiaren torn apart by overwhelming obstacles.In this part,the hindrance of love between Caizi and Jiaren interferes their marriage and creates lovesickness,which expresses the main idea of the novel's romantic motif.The hindrance of love is the starting point of my analysis,which will be referred as "the Pattern of Hindrance of Love".This dissertation is composed of five chapters,the first and last chapters are Introduction and Conclusion,and the text includes three chapters.The first chapter of the text takes some novels as examples to analyze the Pattern of Hindrance of Love,where the causes of the separation between CaiZi and Jiaren are categorized in five types:social class of the family,moral sense,vile character's involvement,conflict and war,and death,and the solutions are:the help of the matchmaker,Caizi's success in his political career,marriage granted by the emperor,and the help of god,in order to take an overall view to the Pattern.The second chapter discussed the expression of the pattern of Hindrance of Love.From the view of time,the passing four seasons reflect the mindsets of the main characters;from the view of space,the story spreads out in a "point-line-plane" fashion and the structural space of the story is enriching.During the separation by the hindrance of love,with the distance between Caizi and Jiaren growing longer,the space for narration grows bigger.On the mentality part,lovesickness was conveyed in all sorts of ways in Caizi Jiaren novels,where poetry is the carrier of their consonance of minds.The important expression of the romantic motif includes sickness resulting from the lovesickness and connection in dreams.The third chapter analyzes the meaning of the Pattern of Hindrance of Love.From the view of art structure,the pattern satisfies Caizi Jiaren novels' need for a romantic core and unique storyline,which creates an aesthetic paradigm;from the view of spiritual level,the pattern is an inheritance from the traditional romantic fiction,which satisfies the readers'aesthetic needs with its storyline but at the same time conveys its political or spiritual metaphor behind the story.In the meantime,the Pattern of Hindrance of Love is a reflection of the ideological change during a social reform,where romantic feelings are valued and praised at that time.
