The tourism industry has developed rapidly around the world presently.It plays a significant role in the economy of many countries.As a country with rich tourism resources,Kenya's income of tourism accounts 10%of GDP.In recent years,the number of Chinese tourists to Kenya shows continuous growth.China has become the second largest tourist source country for Kenya.In order to enhance our understandings of tourism market in Africa and provide references for tourism institutions to develop this market furtherly,this paper is based on the English to Chinese translation of 2013-2018 Kenya National Tourism Strategy,which was written by a Steering Committee under the authority of Kenya's Department of Tourism.The strategy report includes executive summary,abbreviations list of institutions' name,main part of the text(three chapters)and appendices,with a total of 16,251 words.From the perspective of sustainable development,the strategy report analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of Kenya's tourism,discusses the opportunities and challenges it faces in the future as well as proposes a strategy of development and an implementation scheme.The text type of this industry strategy-report developed on the national level is unquestionably informational.It can be seen that the language it uses is rigorous and logical,including a quantity of long and complex sentences.Further,the report involves in the fields of tourism management,marketing,geographical culture and government policy and regulations as well as government agencies and international tourism organizations.How to deal with these issues in the translation is the focus of this paper.In this paper,the author firstly introduces the background and significance of this translation and research project,then describes the process of translation,including the preparation before translation and checking after translation.Next,the author discusses Cattford's translation theory and the use of it as a guidance in selection of translation strategy.In the analysis section,the author gives examples and employs Cattford's three main theories"translation equivalence,translation shift and the limit of translatability" to deal with specific issues in translation.It includes a.using text equivalence theory as a guide to translate terminology and passages;b.using form corresponding theory to deal with issues about literal translation and free translation;c.applying category shifts theory to handle the long and difficult sentences and word's transformation;and d.using the limit of translatability theory to solve the translation of borrowed words.As it is indicated in the paper,the source text is a national tourism strategy report concerning several different fields,such as tourism management,marketing,economics,geography and social cultures.It requires the author to do research in all these areas and establish a good understanding of the relevant knowledge.In the paper,the author takes the guidance of Cattford's translation theory,and applies corresponding translation skills to various translation issues so as to recover the information of the source text as far as possible,and finally attain its functional purpose.
