This is a report on the translation of Chapter 6 of the book Atlas of Travel and Tourism Development, written by Myra Shackley, a professor from Nottingham Trent University. In recent years, with the rapid development of tourism, there is an increasing number of books on travel and tourism. Atlas of Travel and Tourism Development is an excellent book characterized by the innovative view and comprehensive information, which can provide new perspective for the study of tourism. The source text, Chapter 6 North America:Expansion and Revolution, contains a lot of professional history knowledge as well as the relevant knowledge concerning tourism development. In this thesis, the author attaches great importance to the analysis of cases and the solutions to problems. According to the features of source text, George Steiner’s theory of translation compensation is employed as the theoretical framework during the translation of the project. The translator summarizes a few translation strategies from pragmatic and cultural perspectives with the help of specific strategies, such as compensation on lexical, grammatical and syntactic levels. This report draws the conclusion that the proper theoretical basis plays an important role in translation practice. Meanwhile, a translator should possess a solid bilingual knowledge and relative professional reserves on the one hand, and have comprehensive understanding on cultures and histories of different countries on the other hand.
