The purpose of this thesis is to reveal the characteristics of the language used in conclusions and recommendations of Marine Accident Investigation Report on the basis of Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar theory.Conclusive and recommended texts in Maritime Accident Investigation Report are analyzed from the perspectives of idea-tional function,interpersonal and textual function.Major findings are as follows.(1)In ideational function,the main process is firstly,material process,followed by mental process.Secondly,in terms of voice,active voice accounts for the majority in conclusive texts,while passive voice is used frequently in recommended texts.(2)In interpersonal function,declarative mood dominates the whole texts attribute to the fact that the main purpose of Maritime Accident Investigation Report composition is to convey information.Then,modal operators are widely employed to indicate the attitude and feelings of the report composer in conclusive and recommended texts.(3)In textual function firstly,the marked theme appears more frequently because passive voice is preferred in recommended texts in order to guarantee the objectivity in language using.However,unmarked theme also accounts for a considerable proportion because for readers it is convenient to read clearly and smoothly.Secondly,simple theme dominates the majority,which indicates the conciseness of the language used in Maritime Accident Investigation Report.Finally,in TP patterns,parallel pattern ac-counts for the majority,which is applicable to such declarative genre.Nevertheless,for a report with complicated structure,single pattern is obviously far from the requirement of expression.Therefore,a variety of TP patterns are interspersed in the whole report,which enables the composer to describe the report in a more comprehensive perspective.This thesis aims to provide guidance in standardizing composition of conclusions and recommendations in Maritime Accident Investigation Report in English composed by our country.
