As PowerPoint slides are frequently used in international conferences,simultaneous interpreting with PPT has become a typical practice for interpreters.Such practice not only requires interpreters' listening and analysis effort,memory effort and production effort,but also poses great challenge to their overall coordination effort as reading is introduced.As interpreters must allocate efforts to reading PPT during performance,their listening,memory,production and coordination ability are all affected.Based on Daniel Gile,s theoretical framework,the author introduces the Effort Model for simultaneous interpreting with PPT.This thesis further examines how PPT affects interpreters in dealing with problem triggers using Gile's problem trigger theory as a tool of analysis.By conducting an experiment and combining quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis,the author discovers that PPT exerts both positive and negative effects on overall simultaneous interpreting performance.In dealing with problem triggers involving external factors,unknown names and vulnerable signals,PPT plays a helpful role;but when it comes to high density and syntactical difference,PPT is of limited help and may even lead to worse performance.In the end,the author provides the following coping strategies to help interpreters deal with problem triggers during simultaneous interpreting without preparation:interpreters should allocate more efforts to PPT while dealing with problem triggers such as external factors,unknown names and vulnerable signals;facing high-density speech and information involving syntactical difference,interpreters should prioritize listening and allocate fewer efforts to reading.
