Interpreting practices are mostly exposed to errors and failure,yet the extents and consequences vary greatly from one case to another.This study,from the perspective of crisis management,analyzes the categories and causes of Chinese-English interpreting errors,and resorts the 4R Crisis Management model by Robert Heath(namely Reduction,Readiness,Response and Recovery),aiming at reducing the potential risks,minimizing the negative impact that interpreting errors exert and enhancing the reputation of the interpreter.Interpreting crises,in accordance with the evolving characteristics can be divided into pre-crisis(latency),ongoing(outburst and continuation)and post-crisis(settlement and reflection)stages.Correspondingly,to manage the crisis,interpreters can adopt such mechanisms as risk management,emergency mechanism,crisis communication respectively,together with proper and timely psychological management approaches.Based on the stakeholder theory,interpreting failure can also be categorized into different types,triggered by the mistakes of interpreters,technical breakdown,exterior disturbance,speaker’s faults,poor communication between the interpreter and the client,etc.The thesis will also go into details on how to tackle the errors and failure in conjunction with each stakeholder subdivision.Verification is also going to be conducted to analyze the efficacy of risk management in preparing the interpreters in face of failure,with empirical case studies to prove the effect that crisis management mechanisms can make on improving the interpreting performance.
