| Small and Medium Size Enterprises(SMEs)have become a large proportion of economy around the world,and the virtuous development of SMEs shares a strong link to the growth of economy.Since the new era of China’s economy,the structure of which has been expected to be transformed and upgraded.In every industry,there are a lot of new start-up enterprises,especially in high-tech industry.Whether these enterprises could survive and grow in the market rely hugely on the market environment and the support they could get from the government.It has been growing into an important task for government to help SMEs to overcome the development obstacles,to solve the financial problems,to expand its business and to enhance its competitiveness.This report is based on the author’s English-Chinese translation of Growing Your Business:A Report on Growing Micro Businesses written by Lord Young,an adviser to the Prime Minister of Britain on small business and enterprise.The source text is divided into thirteen chapters with 18,163 English words(including charts).It covers the fields of economy,finance,politics and business management,and involves the following main issues:the financing of SMEs,the co-operation between big businesses and small businesses,the collaboration between enterprises and universities as well as colleges,the coordination of supply chain,the employment,the government purchasing,and all kind of government policies and programmes to help the SMEs to grow.Guided by Hans J.Vemeer’s Skopos theory and its "Three Principles for Translation",the author manages to choose the proper translation strategies to solve the specific problems facing in this translation task,such as the long and complicated sentences,charts,terminology,names of institutions and financial programmes.In this translation report,the author firstly introduces this translation task,the source text and the pre-translation preparation.Then the author chooses Skopos theory as the guidance theory in the view of the textual characteristics.To achieve the expected goals of this translation task and convey the information of source text accurately to the target readers,the author adopts the strategy of both free translation and literal translation,using the skills of addition and omission.In the case study,the author discusses the translation of charts,terminology,compound sentences and texts as well as adding the translation annotations in the target text.At the end of the report,the author draws a conclusion on the experience gained from this translation task.As the report reveals,the source text covers a wide range of aspects,from the unique cultures of British politics,economy and financial field to all kinds of supporting programmes launched by British government which the target readers will find unfamiliar with.It requires the translator to accumulate rich background knowledge during the pre-translation preparation.It also requires the translator to take into account the code of language and cognition level of target readers when selecting corresponding translation strategy. |
