A Project Report On Translation Of Folk Songs Of Liu Sanjie(Excerpt)

"Folk songs of Liu Sanjie" was included in the first batch of state-level intangible cultural heritage lists in 2006.It is an important part of the Zhuang culture in China and an indispensable part of Chinese folk songs.At present,many traditional and cultural works have been translated in English.However,the English translation of culture of ethnic minorities is still in its initial stage.The translation project report is a summary of the translation of Folk Songs of Liu Sanjie(more exactly,its Volume 1 and Volume 2),which is commissioned and authorized by Lijiang Publishing Limited.This report can be referential for similar translation practice,and can offer solutions to some typical translation problems,so at to facilitate the translation and overseas promotion of Zhuang Culture and folk songs.Before this translation project,few folk songs of Liu Sanjie were translated and introduced overseas through Caidiao opera,movie and Nanning International Folk Song Arts Festival.Relevant translation studies are also very few,in which few issues are covered.This project report may fill this gap.Xu Yuanchong's "Triple Beauty" theory was used as a guiding theory in this translation practice to deliver the image beauty(length of lines,neatness of lines,antithesis),prosodic beauty(rhythm,rhyme,prosodic rhetoric and other phonological features)and message beauty(rhetoric,emotional connotation and artistic mood)in the Zhuang folk songs of Liu Sanjie.The analysis of the above mentioned features in the source text is given in this report,so is the detailed discussion of how to reproduce them in the target text.Lastly,the methods to realize these aesthetic elements are also offered based on concrete cases,including simplifying or complicating expressions,appropriate addition or deletion of information,line break,redistribution of message,adjustment on syntactic structures,using synonymous expressions,poetic license,reasonable imagination and scene poeticizing.The report also points out that a rhyming dictionary can help in rhyme creating.
