A Report On John Deway’s Ethics:Democracy As Experience Under Newmark’s Translation Theory

John Dewey,one of the primary figures associated with the philosophy of pragmatism,contributed numerous works to the philosophy of education and politics,but failed to provide a systematic framework of his ethical insights.Based on this observation,Gregory Fernando Pappas’s book John Dewey’s Ethics:Democracy as Experienceis a very meaningful work,as it represents the first time anyone has ever analyzed and dissected John Dewey’s insights into ethics.This formidable insight is so complex and profound that it becomes the primary obstacle for the translator and continues to be a significant challenge for this translation project.In pre-translation stage,the analysis of the related background materials,high-frequency words and parallel texts provides us with an accurate understanding of the core content,as well as the style and characteristics of the original text.More specifically,the text,entitled A Philosophical Justification of Democracy and chosen for the current study,is the 13th section of Chapter 3 of Pappas’ book,and it presents the holistic interpretation of experience and democracy and illustrates the rationality of democracy ideal,thus being simultaneously expressive and informative.By applying Newmark’s text type and semantic and communicative translation theory,the translation report reveals a sound validation of the scholar’s own unique philosophical insights through the levels of high-frequency words,complex sentences and text.It places an emphasis on the faithfulness,both semantically and communicatively,to serve as the perpetual guideline for the entire translation process,and it is likely to provide guidance and direction when translating similar texts in the future.
