Report On EST Translation Under The Guidance Of Newmark's Translation Theory

Materials,one of the three fundamental pillars of human civilization,are essential to modern life.The study and development of new materials is indispensable to industrial development and social progress.As a universal language,English becomes a vital communicative tool in learning the general knowledge and frontier developments in materials science.This report is accomplished based on the author's practice of translating a specialized English textbook Selected English for Materials Science.Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation,along with a combination of text typology,the author analyzed the problems encountered in the translation process.This report first gives an introduction to the backgrounds and requirements of the translation task,next describes the translation process,and then introduces Newmark's text category and text type,semantic translation and communicative translation.Semantic translation is defined as an attempt to render within the constraints of the semantic and syntactic structures of the target language,the exact contextual meaning as closely as to the original context,while communicative translation attempts to produce as closely the same effect as it does on the readers of the original text.The former values the original content whereas the latter lays stresses on the effect of the target text and readership.In the case study part,the author first discusses major problems encountered in translation,including the language style,technical terms,noninalization structure,passive sentence and long or complicated sentences,and then proposes the solutions to the above-listed problems on the basis of semantic translation and communicative translation.In terms of requirements from the clients,semantic translation is employed so as to ensure the conformity in language style as well as accuracy and professionalism in the translation of technical words.In order to avoid ambiguity and misunderstanding,communicative translation is adopted for translating nominalization structure,passive sentence and long or complicated sentences in accordance with the target readers'reading habits,thereby guaranteeing the communicative effect of the translated version.It is expected to offer some references to the translation of English for materials science.
