Translating Novels Under The Guidance Of The Theory Of Translator's Subjectivity

The siege of Krishnapur is a classical novel written by Farrell,a British novelist.It depicts the life and experience of British colonialists while they were besieged in Krishnapur,criticizes the British colonialists,reveals the declining and deterioration of the empire and the evils of its colonial policy,and reflects and challenges the "superior race" or "superior civilization",which forcefully deconstructs and disintegrates the Imperial Myth.The first two chapters of Part One of this novel are selected as the source text(ST),with a total of more than 10000 words,for translation practice.While the employment of such rhetorical devices as "image","metaphor" and "parody" in The siege of Krishnapur is crucial to the characterization,the plots and the disclosing of the meaning of the novel,it is a great challenge for the translator to reproduce them faithfully and effectively in the translated text.According to the theory of translator's subjectivity,the translator,who should respect the source text on the one hand and give his subjective initiative into full play on the other to achieve his translation goal,is characteristic of having cultural awareness,humanistic personality,and aesthetic creativity.Translator's subjectivity mainly includes three aspects,namely,the option of the ST,the use of translation methods and techniques along with the language's recreation.With the theory of translator's subjectivity as the theoretical guidance,this report focuses on the discussion of the proper translation methods and techniques of the three typical rhetorical devices,i.e.,image,metaphor,and parody employed in The siege of Krishnapur.The report summarizes the experience achieved in the process of translation and further reveals the significance of translator's subjectivity in the translation of novels.The report is composed of five chapters.Chapter One introduces the novelist and the ST,as well as the purpose and structure of the report.Chapter Two deals with the description of the translation process,including pre-translation preparations,translation process and after-translation proofreading.Chapter Three is concerned with the theory to be applied in the translation practice.A brief review of traditional studies on translation is given,followed by an introduction of the definitions and notion of translator's subjectivity.Chapter Four is the case analysis,the most important part of the report,wherein the three typical rhetorical devices—image,metaphor,and parody—in the ST and their translation are discussed in detail.Chapter Five is the conclusion of the whole report.
