This report is based on the novel The Great Americam Novel.which was written by the famous American writer Philip Roth.The novel mainly tells that when the Second World War was coming to an end.a baseball team of Ruppert port wandered from place to place and competed with other baseball teams because they rent the court to the Government for the collection of troops.A retired sports journalist Ward Smith was fighting with the baseball team,he witnessed Munday's heyday and later the baseball team was framed as a conspiracy of the Communist Party and finally it was destroyed.Through the tragic experiences and decay of a baseball team,this novel shows how American society fell into turmoil after the Second World War.The theory of functional equivalence of Eugene A.Nida is selected as the guidance theory of the translation practice.In the process of translating vocabulary and sentences,the writer meets a lot of difficulties.In view of these problems,the writer uses different translation methods to solve them,and finally the translated version and the original text achieve the lexical equivalence and syntactic equivalence.In the translation of difficult words,such as technical terms in baseball,proper nouns and polysemous words,the writer adopts the methods of adding footnotes,transliteration,four-character structures in Chinese and so on.In the translation of character dialogues,the writer adopts the methods of addition,free translation and so on.In the translation of long sentences,the writer adopts the methods of change of voice,split and so on.Through this translation practice,the writer finds a lot of shortcomings and deeply understands the great importance of preparations before translation and the guidance theory.And when translating a novel,translators need to read the context carefully,then use some appropriate translation methods to deal with it,and finally translators can complete a better translation.In addition,this report only does research on part of the novel The Great American Novel,the writer hopes this report can be helpful for the future scholars who continue to study the novel.
