English grammar is the basis of English learning for students.At the present time,most Chinese teachers at Senior High Schools apply the traditional method in English grammar teaching.This traditional teaching method is teacher-centered,which attaches great importance to transferring knowledge,neglecting students' motivation and interest.It focuses on teachers' teaching rather than students' learning;so students' performance in the classroom is very passive.Due to this fact,most English teachers are more likely to devote their time and energy to the more urgent teaching disciplines,such as reading and writing.As a result,grammar teaching lags behind other disciplines in the teaching of English,and students' grammar is very poor.In view of this situation,this paper intends to reform the grammar teaching method at senior high schools in order to find a better English grammar method.In recent years,the productive failure teaching method has been widely used in science disciplines.It is a new teaching method that is totally different from the traditional teaching method and is seldom used in English grammar teaching.This thesis attempts to apply this method to English grammar teaching,hoping to reform English grammar teaching so as to improve students' English grammar ability and realize the true purpose of grammar teaching learning.By studying the requirements of the New Curriculum Standard and the problems in English grammar teaching,this paper analyzes the reasons for students' poor grammar performance and puts forward a new grammar teaching method to improve students' academic performance in English.In this study,the author conducted a three-month grammar teaching experiment to see whether the productive failure method is effective in improving the senior high school students' English grammar grade.The study focuses on the following three questions: 1.What are the problems in the English grammar teaching at senior high schools? 2.What are the advantages of the productive failure method in English grammar teaching? 3.How can the productive failure method improve senior high school students' grammar learning?In order to answer these questions,the author chose 98 students from two classes(Class 2 and Class 5,Grade One)at Ping Le Senior High School as the subjects.Class 2 served as the experimental class(EC),while class 5 served as the control class(CC).The number of students in these two classes was equal.In the whole experiment,the EC adopted the productive failure method,while the control class adopted the traditional teaching method.At the beginning,in order to know the students' problems in their grammar learning and the causes of these problems,students in the EC were asked to do a pre-questionnaire and pre-interview.Students in these two classes were required to take a pre-test.After three months,these two classes were required to take a post-test.In addition,students in the EC needed to do a post-questionnaire and post-interview,and the collected data are analyzed with SPSS.Both the questionnaire survey and the interview results show that the productive failure method has positive effect on students' grammar emotional attitude.In addition,the results of the tests show that the average grammar level of the experimental class is significantly higher than that of the control class after the experiment.In conclusion,the study shows that compared with the traditional English grammar teaching approach,the productive failure method can stimulate the senior high school students' interest in English grammar learning,and can improve their English grammar proficiency.
