Abstract/Summary:
An economic text conveys multiple levels of information and numerous technical terms in complicated structures.Economic Development in Africa Report 2016:Debt Dynamics and Development Finance in Africa is a typical economic text with invaluable information. In this sense, the translation of the text bears certain importance in that Chinese people can understand the African economic situation more thoroughly and participate in the globalization more deeply.Using the functional equivalence theory, the author analyzes how to achieve functional equivalence at lexical, syntactic and discourse levels. With the assistance of the functional equivalence theory, the author translated the text carefully and rearranged words, sentences,,and paragraphs in Chinese through the translating process so that the translation could present a high level of natural equivalence. In the translating process, the author encountered multiple types of problems arising mainly from the lexical, syntactic and discourse levels. The problems are divided into four kinds:(1)English terms that have no Chinese counterparts;(2)proper nouns that have standard Chinese equivalents but Chinese readers barely know them;(3)translating difficulties arising from complex sentences;(4)the difficulty to achieve natural equivalence at discourse level. As to solving those translating difficulties, the author employed diverse kinds of translation strategies under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, amplification, subtraction, transliteration, communicative translation, free translation and footnotes included.Through the analysis of the report,it is proved that the functional equivalence theory can effectively guide translators in the translating process of economic texts more efficiently and produce a highly equivalent translated text.
