The Study On The Active Divorce Of Women In Shanghai During The Republic Period(1912-1937)

The Republic of China was a period of alternation between the old and the new.With the continuous infiltration of new ideas,people's concept of marriage concept,marriage view and legal concept have changed greatly compared with the traditional society,which leads to various marriage problems.Among them,the divorce phenomenon is the most can reflect the traditional society to modern social transformation examples.From divorce phenomenon in this period,we can see that women struggle for freedom of marriage and get rid of family bondage,there is a microcosmic change in the humble status of women.This paper studies the active divorce of Shanghai women in the Republic of China,trying to understand the change of Chinese marriage in the Republic of China,revealing the cultural and value conflicts behind marriage concept and behavior.During the period of the Republic of China,Shanghai was the first city to open a port.This is closely related to the environment in which it is located.First,the Shanghai concession was established to facilitate the exchange of advanced culture between Shanghai and the West in the early twentieth Century.The concept of equality between men and women in the West and the concept of freedom of marriage had an early impact on the people of Shanghai.In the meanwhile,many people of insight gathered in Shanghai to vigorously promote the concept of equality and freedom in the West,and to launch a women's liberation movement.In their spread,a group of new newspapers,colleges and universities appear,women increasingly self-awakening.Second,Shanghai's unique economic conditions,widening the space for women's social life.During the period of the Republic of China,the entertainment service industry,industry and commerce,culture and media industry were superior to other areas in Shanghai.The women who were baptized by the western ideology and culture began to move to the social networking sites,which further accelerated thecollapse of traditional marriage concept.Third,The modern marriage law has been constantly improved with the change of society,women have gradually enjoyed the right to divorce.Therefore,in this social context,the phenomenon of Shanghai women's active divorce is increasing day by day.From the point of view of the occupation in which women file for divorce,the proportion of women workers is the largest,which has a direct relationship with the developed economic conditions in Shanghai.There are many reasons for the divorce,including emotional,economic,physiological and other factors.From this point of view,modern women have made great progress in the rights of divorce than those of the old ones.However,due to the limitations of The Times,Shanghai women's active divorce in the republic of China was full of frustrations,they must bear the pressure from various aspects.Social organizations,people from all walks of life and government departments have responded effectively,giving women the greatest support and encouragement for active divorce,which is social progress.Nevertheless,even so,we cannot ignore the huge negative factors that divorce brings to the society,children become the most innocent victims,but also cause a series of social morbid problems,affecting the social stability and development.
