Liang Qichao is not only a famous politician, philosopher, historian, but also an important calligrapher in the history of modern China. In the course of development of stone inscription study, the stone inscription study conducted by Liang Qichao came down in one continuous line from that by Ruan Yuan and Kang Youwei.Besides,Liang Qichao endured great hardships in pioneer work in the transition period from classical stone inscription study to modern stone inscription study. This paper took the postscript of rubbings of stone inscriptions by Liang Qichao as the research object, carried out in-depth study on the theoretical characteristics of the thought of stone inscriptions study of Liang Qichao and explored the origin of his calligraphic style of stone inscriptions, which provided theoretical and practical enlightenment for the contemporary stone inscriptions study. This paper presented that the postscript written by Liang Qichao were characterized by centralization, modernization of literary style and artistic selection of rubbings and considered that the postscript of the rubbings of stone inscriptions by Liang Qichao were unique, keeping up with the times and pioneering. Both the stone inscriptions and rubbings were paid much attention by the stone inscriptions study conducted by Liang Qichao. It was proposed by the paper that Liang Qichao and Kang Youwei apparently disagreed with the view of stone inscriptions and rubbings of each other while contrary-minded and concluded that the aesthetics of stone inscriptions of Liang Qichao was influenced by his aesthetics of rubbings. Therefore, there were contradictions between his description of the differences between the calligraphic style of the Southern Dynasties and the Northern Dynasties and his description of calligraphic style of the Northern Dynasties in the postscript.By referring to Liang Qichao's discussion of the calligraphic style of the Northern and Southern Dynasties,it was considered that he held the point of view that "both stone inscriptions and rubbings should be attached much importance to" with regard to the convergence of the calligraphic style of the Northern and Southern Dynasties;as for Liang Qichao's calligraphic style showed by the postscript, this paper started with the phenomenon that the "archaic style" missed in the handwriting of postscript by Liang Qichao and pointed out that although he studied the official script hard,he failed to be skilled at it.At the same time,it carried out in-depth analysis of the causes of the relatively mature running script and regular script of him. With the discussion on the gain and loss of his calligraphy practice, the problems that needed to be paid attention to in the process of calligraphy study of stone inscriptions were taken into account. This paper also found that Liang Qichao showed an obvious artistic sociological tendency when he staged the style of calligraphy, and summed up the characteristics of staged criticism and classification criticism to the wrongly written characters in the stone inscriptions of the Northern and Southern Dynasties in order to provide enlightenments for the application of wrongly written characters in the stone inscriptions in the creation of modern calligraphy.
