A Report On The Translation Of The Field Of Cultural Production(Excerpt)

The book,The Field of Cultural Production,is a collection of 10essays about the field of literature and art,written by Pierre Bourdieu during 1968 to 1987 and edited by Randal Johnson then published by Columbia University Press in 1993.It discussed the production field of literature works as well as the production and acceptation process by putting them in historically complex social network.In this paper,the first part of the book was translated,and then a practice report was completed.The academic source text has plenty terminologiesand a number of long English sentences with complicated grammatical structures,and rigorous logics,resulting in much difficulties on comprehension and translation.In order to deal with lexical problems,the author translate by referring to parallel texts,choosing lexical meaning according to the context,conveying dictionary's lexical meanings and extending lexical meanings.While another five-step approach to translating long English sentences into Chinese was adopted to analyze,restructure and polish complicated long sentences.Based on practical translation experience,the report analyzed academic text's features and translation problems,and explored their solutions on lexical and syntactic level.It was indicated that the academic text's professional and abstract lexical characteristics require translators to make full preparation before translating,including collecting terminologies and sorting out their logics.Furthermore,only by putting these words into specific contexts to select or determine their meanings and analyzing and restructuring long sentences at the same time,can we convey the exact information of the source text and render the translated texts more readable.
