This article is mainly based on Bourdieu's sociological theory,and takes Yan Fu's translation of A History of Politics as the research object to explore the translation of political texts in the late Qing Dynasty.The purpose of this article is to explore the social characteristics and translation characteristics of political text translation in the late Qing Dynasty from the perspective of Bourdieu's sociological theory,and undergo Yan Fu's A History of Politics to analyze the field characteristics,the impacts of translation field on the choice of the text,analyze what economic,cultural,and social capital Yan Fu holds,and how this capital affects the dissemination of the text.This article also analyzes the habitus formed by Yan Fu and the influence of Yan Fu's habitus on the translation of political terms in A History of Politics.This thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction.Research background,research purpose and significance,and the structure of the thesis are included in it.The second chapter is a literature review,which reviews the current research status of A History of Politics,and translation studies based on Bourdieu's sociological theory.The third chapter is the theoretical framework,which introduces an overview of Bourdieu's sociological theory and the core concepts of this theory.The fourth chapter is an analysis of the translation of A History of Politics from the perspective of Bourdieu's sociological theory.It also concludes the influence of field,capital,and habitus on the text selection,text dissemination,and translation strategies of A History of Politics.The fifth chapter is the conclusion.This thesis draws the following conclusions.The theme of the translation field in the late Qing Dynasty was mainly to see the world,to seek prosperity to save the country,and to introduce democratic revolution and scientific enlightenment.The field of translation in the late Qing Dynasty was closely related to the background of learning from the west.A large number of official and unofficial translation agencies began to emerge in China.Translators changed from translating religious texts to choosing translation texts independently.In this field,Yan Fu translated A History of Politics,a classic political science book,aiming at saving the nation,introducing the western political system,and making the intellectuals reflect on the domestic political system.Yan Fu's economic capital include salary,stock dividends,deposit interest,manuscript remuneration etc..This stable and abundant economic capital and Yan Fu's translation career mutually promoted each other,forming a virtuous circle.Yan Fu's cultural capital includes the traditional culture learned in private schools,the foundation of Chinese and western knowledge learned in the Shipbuilding School,and the accumulation of western scientific knowledge during his stay in the UK.Yan Fu's social capital includes his social interpersonal relationships and translation office duties.Yan Fu's capital directly or indirectly promoted the dissemination and influence of his translation works.In addition,changes of the environment prompted Yan Fu to accept different cultural educations in China and the West,and made him form the habitus of comparing between Chinese and western cultures.Yan Fu's habitus also influenced his translation strategies.The translation strategies and characteristics in A History of Politics include literal translation,free translation,transliteration,multiple translation of one word,and the use of ancient Chinese.
