Translation Strategies In Two Chinese Versions Of The Awakening From The Perspective Of Gender Difference

The feminist theory rooted and developed in the feminism and feminist movement intends to learn gender discrimination,concentrate on sexual politics,power relations and sexuality as well as call for the promotion of woman's status,rights and interests.As the "cultural turn" was emerging in 1980s and made its effect in different fields,gender issues were brought into the translation filed and the feminist theory began to integrate with translation studies,which leads to the feminist translation theory.This theory also provides lots of new perspectives for the translation studies as well as in such domains like literary criticism,social studies and translation studies and so on.At the same time,feminists always make an effort to do their translation practice all the time and they claim that all kinds of translation strategies should be utilized to ensure their visibility just as they are seen and heard in every other filed.The Awakening is one of the representative and master works of Kate Chopin,a world-renowned American forerunner of feminist author in 20th century.It records that the heroin Edna Pontellier is in the dilemma between the rising unorthodox opinions of femininity,motherhood and the prevailing social attitudes of turn-of-century American South and commits suicide at last to grow as a truly free and independent woman.This book attracts a large number of scholars and researchers but its criticisms have been rather limited within boundaries of studies of feminism,symbolism,theme and conversation analysis,etc.And what's more,studies on its Chinese versions remain unpopular though book market has witnessed a popularity in its translation versions in China.Thus,this thesis aims to make up for the translation practice of The Awakening by adopting the feminist translation theory.It offers a comparative study on the two Chinese versions of The Awakening respectively translated by female translator Yang Yingmei and male translator Liu Xinming from the perspective of the Feminist Translation Theory in order to examine the influence of gender difference in the translators' choice of translation strategies and to analyze effects of their translation strategies,with an attempt to further the study of The Awakening.
