| Taken from a popular science book Meteorology Today,Chapter Seven"Precipitation" is used as the source text in this practice report.It introduces the formation of,and the measuring methods for,rainfall and snowfall and helps promote the cross-linguistic communication of the meteorological knowledge.The linguistic typology proposed by Charles N.Li&Sandra A.Thompson is employed to guide the translation practice.According to this typology,English belongs to the subject-prominent language,while Chinese is classified as a topic-prominent one.Based on the difference between the two languages,the report identifies various hidden topics in the source English sentences and explores the topicalization strategies for E-C translation.Many examples are provided herein to illustrate the four strategies proposed in this report,hoping to achieve greater readability of the translation of meteorological texts under the guidance of the afore-mentioned typological difference.The report is divided into six chapters.The first chapter provides an overview of the research background.The second chapter examines the characteristics of the source text and the translation requirements.The third chapter describes the whole translation process,including preparations,rendition and proofreading.The fourth chapter probes into the differences between English and Chinese languages from the perspective of the linguistic typology by Li&Thompson and explores the implications they have for the translation practice.The fifth chapter proposes four kinds of strategies for topicalization(i.e.retention,fronting,amplification and omission)and illustrates them with examples from the translation practice.The final chapter summarizes the translation project and discusses the problems and limitations in translation practice. |
