It has been observed in the area of teaching Chinese as a foreign language that the resultative complements are very important and at the same time posse a lot of acquisition difficulties for foreign students. It is an obvious fact that both Chinese and Yoruba have this grammar point. In Chinese however, they have more complex structures and meanings than they do in Yoruba. Therefore, foreign students whose native language is Yoruba are inevitably not excluded in the difficulties of acquiring Chinese resultative complements. It is therefore particularly necessary to embark on the comparative and error analyses of Chinese and Yoruba resultative complements. This thesis compares the resultative complements in Chinese and Yoruba. It also investigates the errors in their usage while at the same time proposes some reasonable teaching suggestions. The thesis is divided into five parts. The first part introduces the origin of the research, the table of content, methodology and the literature review. The second and third parts compare the similarities and differences in the structural and semantic characteristics of resultative complement expressions in Chinese and Yoruba. The fourth part investigatesthe types of errors and the causes of errors by native Yoruba Chinese language students. In the fifth part,we give some recommendations for learning the Chinese resultative complements by native Yoruba students and also for teaching them. These recommendations are in three parts: the problems that should be noticed in the process of teaching, the teaching strategies and the compilation of the teaching materials. We believe that all of these will eventually be useful for the successful learning and teaching of Chinese resultative complements in the future.
