The Association Between Mobile Phone Addiction And Personality Trait Among Students

More and more attention has been paid to the phenomenon of students cell phone addiction,and researchers have been looking for the predictors of students cell phone addiction.As a competitor,personality traits are being paid more and more attention,and related researches are increasing.However,there are two main problems in the previous study: first,the results are different: some think the two are not related,and some think the two are closely related.Second,the main object of the study is college students,few middle school students,and junior middle school students are less.In response to these two main problems,this study attempts to examine the correlation between personality traits and mobile phone addiction,and analyze the mechanism of personality traits on mobile phone addiction.A meta-analysis method is used to review and integrate the previous conflicting results.The statistical index directed by the meta analysis is the correlation coefficient,including 36 independent studies involving 21698 subjects.The results of meta analysis showed that:(1)the correlation between EPQ's Extroversion,Psychoticism,Neuroticism and cell phone addiction were-0.016,0.318 and 0.403 respectively.The Extroversion and Neuroticism of Big Five Personality are positively correlated with cell phone addiction,and the correlation is 0.093 and 0.199.Openness,Agreeableness and Conscientiousness are negatively correlated with cell phone addiction,and the correlation is-0.095,-0.166 and-0.165 respectively.(2)The effects of measurement tools,cultural background,literature type and the subjects' group on the relationship between the five personality questionnaire and the mobile phone addiction significantly.Study two used the Mobile Phone Addiction Scale(MPAI)and the Big Five Personality Scale(BFI)to conduct a questionnaire survey among 1362 junior middle school students.The data were analyzed by independent sample t test,ANOVA,factor analysis and so on.(2)There was no significant correlation between Extroversion and Responsibility and mobile phone addiction;Agreeableness,Neuroticism and mobile phone addiction were significantly positively correlated,and the correlation sizes were 0.16 and 0.15,respectively,and Openness was negatively correlated with-0.09.(3)Neuroticism is positively correlated with the total score of mobile phone addiction and the dimensions of "out of control","withdrawal","avoidance" and "inefficiency".On the whole,personality traits are closely related to cell phone addiction;Neuroticism can predictthe degree of cell phone addiction of junior high school students most.
