With the accelerating development of science and the advent of the age of science and technology in China, detective novels have become increasingly popular among Chinese readers. In this translation practice, the author has translated A Missing Woman,a detective novel written by American author Jack Huber. The original text is taken from Fiberead,a website devoted to the introduction of many overseas mainstream novels into China with a view to building a bridge between the source text writers and target text readers for mutual understanding and cultural communication. The paper is a translation practice report based on this translation practice. For its text type, the translation of detective novel is classified into literary translation, and the core criterion of the literary translation is to meet the demands and accepted habits of the target language readers. In the specific translation process, according to the text features of detective novels and the readers' features, the author selected the translation variation theory which takes better care of the readers' intention as the guiding theory, and made the most of flexible and various translation approaches such as amplification, omission, division, annotation, literal translation and free translation. In this way,the translated text is fluent and the original contents are conveyed as much as possible to show the style of the original text and to meet the needs of target language readers. At the same time, based on concrete cases, the problems encountered in the translation process are analyzed and studied from the lexical level, syntactic level, discoursal level, and cultural level of the text. The author hopes that this translation practice report can provide some references for those who translate defective fictions and other literary works.
