A Report On The Translation Of The Rise Of Athens (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Translation Variation Theory

This translation report is based on the translation practice of a history text The Rise of Athens(excerpted)which was written by Anthony Everitt.The excerpted parts from chapter 8 to chapter 12 describe the Greco-Persian Wars that lasted for half a century.Anthony Everitt selects several typical battles and famous politicians and militarists to present the Greco-Persian Wars.In order to finish this translation project,the author chooses translation variation theory as the guiding theory.Translation variation theory,put forward by Chinese scholar Huang Zhonglian(2002),plays a guiding role in this report.This theory attracts many scholars' attention while it also brings new perspectives for translation studies.This report describes translation task,translation variation theory and translation process respectively in different chapters.Then,the author selects several examples to illustrate the application of translation variation theory and to show that the translators can develop their own creativity to do translation variation to meet the special needs of different readers.Finally,the author comes to the following conclusions.First,as a new theory,translation variation theory can be used in guiding translation works so that the subjectivity of translators can be exerted.Secondly,translation is not conversion of words,but involves creative exertion.Thirdly,the readers' needs could be taken into full consideration.In the last part of this report,the author illustrates what she has learned during this translation practice.These experiences will lay a foundation for her future translation practice.
