Lin Fengmian's artistic thought started in the early 20 th century.The period of major conflict was happening between China and Western world.Lin was strongly influenced by the modernist movement in Europe while his education background is typical traditional Chinese.During that age,contemporary China was in the final stage of feudal society,just been forced-opened by the war.Not only the country's military and sovereignty were overwhelmed,but also Chinese confidence on our own Culture.Under the advocacy of the The May Fourth Movement,such opinions as “wholesale Westernization” and “national nihilism” emerged in an endless stream.Lin Fengmian and the pioneers of the times were aware of the importance and urgency of "renovating" and "improving" Chinese art——They must create new art form with their own identity.In the second year of returning from the study in France,Lin Fengmian faced the controversy in the revitalization of Cinese art: Advocating a revolution of Chinese paintings by completely turning into Western art;or the opposite: the history of Chinese painting must be inherited from its tradition.Lin Fengmian systematically analyzed that the superiority of Chinese art is the inferior part of western art with his own research and practice,while the opposite is still the same.Using the advantages of Chinese and Western art could complete each other and meanwhile,promoting the renaissance of Chinese art.The formation of his artistic style and the practice of the art movement have significantly strong influence on the continued exploration and innovation made by the contemporary Chinese artists.After a century of evolution and development,the world has changed.With the multicultural development and global integration,the convergence of eastern and western identity is proceeding in an unprecedented way.However Contemporary art is still centered in the West,and Chinese artists are still facing the problem of how to use the West-established art language to express Chinese spirit.Both artists and scholars are exploring the nationality and independency of Chinese contemporary art.How do they "return" and how to "rebuild" ? Rejuvenating the nation's culture confidence and reverting to traditional culture have also become the unanimous choice for many artists.The integration of China and the West is one of the most important motifs of the art world.However,under the fast-changing circumstances of the artistic background,why this theme always been treated as nostalgia among Chinese contemporary artists?Through the research of Lin Fengmian's the process of the artistic practice and the formation of his thoughts,this study hopes to analyze how Lin Fengmian's artistic ideas are formed and why it still carried forward in the scene of Chinese contemporary Art.
