This thesis studies omission in TV English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting(SI)based on source-target text correspondence and Ear-Voice Span(EVS)patterns.Previous research and studies mainly discuss how TV SI differs from other interpreting modes, and how to cope with the constraints arising from TV SI.However, there are relatively fewer studies on omissions on TV SI,and fewer attempt to explore possible factors behind the omissions. This thesis discusses two questions, namely, what are the common features of omissions and what are the factors behind the omissions in TV English-Chinese SI?This thesis studies the seven versions of TV English-Chinese SI of 2017 President Trump's inaugural speech. The first measure is to compare chunks between the source and target texts and to examine the types, number and distribution of omissions. The second measure is to use the software of Partitur Editor(Version 1.6)to calculate EVS to infer the factors behind the omissions.Based on the data, the paper finds out that firstly, certain types of segments such as metaphors and elaborations are more likely to be omitted in TV interpreting and the omissions are mainly distributed in the middle and end of the sentences.Secondly, language specificity and EVS are important factors influencing the occurrence of omissions. In addition,EVS and number of omissions are found to be correlated:the better the interpreters manage their EVS,the fewer omissions their interpretations will contain. This thesis expects to further clarify the universality and factors behind omission,to enhance understanding of TV SI and to give implications for further research into this field.
