The Role Of Psychological Detachment From Work In The Spillover Effect Of Workplace Incivility

Studies have shown that workplace incivility have a spillover effect leading to prolong strains for employees,but the mechanism and boundary conditions of the effect are not yet clear.Therefore,this study attempts to figure it out,exploring how and why workplace incivility have a effect on employees' maladaptive physical and mental health and behavior.Workplace incivility was differentiated between a specific day's(specifically Monday)and chronic.Using piecewise measuring,Our study first checked the influence of workplace incivility on employees'mental health and sleep;second investigated the mediating versus moderating role of "psychological detachment from work" in the relationship between workplace incivility and work-family conflict in that day,and the morderating effect of chronic workplace incivility which is an overall accumulated perception and evaluation of workplace incivility in the last one year in that spillover effect.Hierarchical regression analysis affirmed a moderated-mediation model.Specifically,our results mainly showed that,1)workplace incivility on Monday postively related to emplooyees' ongoing impaired mental health at the end of work and the following evening at home;2)workplace incivility on Monday unrelated to emplooyees' sleep(including sleep duration and overall sleep quality);3)Monday's workplace incivlity negatively predicts"psychological detachment from work" on monday's evening;4)Monday's"psychological detachment from work" partially mediated not moderated the relationship between Monday's workplace incivility and Monday's work-family conflict;5)the latter half path of the spillover effect through "psychological detachment from work" was moderated by the chronic workplace incivlity.Thus,our study have theoretical and practical implications.
