With the rapid development of science and the more frequent international exchanges of science and technology than ever before,English as an important language tool to promote the exchange between countries, has attracted people's attention increasingly. But how to translate technical texts written in English into accurate and authentic Chinese will be essential to the contribution of technological exchanges between China and other countries.Since EST has its own characteristics in both lexical and syntactic structures different from other kinds of texts, translators are required to know the characteristics of EST and to grasp the translation theories and techniques which should be flexibly applied to translation practice. This thesis is aimed at studying the methods for translating technical texts written in English into Chinese from the perspective of Reiss' Theory on Text Typology and Translation as exemplified by the material excerpted from Obesity.Reiss divides texts into three main types, the informative, the expressive and the operative on the basis of the function of language.Categorized mainly as an informative text according to Reiss' Theory on Text Typology and Translation, the text focuses on transmitting information. In translating this kind of material, much attention should be given to the truthfulness of the content, the language styles should be simple to understand, the readers should be centered and the translation should conform to the expressive habit of target language.Based on the type of the text and the Theory on Text Typology and Translation, translation techniques in translation of technical texts, such as transformation, division, addition, omission and annotation, are provided by the translation practice so as to transmit information. The good use of the techniques hopefully helps improve the quality of EST translation.
