A Report On C-E Translation Of Lexical Items In Social Responsibility Report (2016) Of People's Daily Online

A corporate social responsibility(CSR)report conclusively states the social responsibilities that an enterprise performs.Besides,a CSR report reveals an enterprise's societal,cultural,economic and environmental strategies and actual conducts to the stakeholders.In recent years,many enterprises have begun to release Chinese-English bilingual CSR reports to gain international reputation and better implement the "going global" strategy.Chinese companies published 1710 CSR reports in total in 2016.However,the quality of the English versions of Chinese CSR reports is far from satisfactory.This translation practice report is based on the author's English translation of Social Responsibility Report(2016)of People's Daily Online,mainly discussing the C-E translation of lexical items.Based on the introduction to the source text,translation task,preparation before translation,description for the translation process and post-translation,this translation practice report analyzes the difficulties in translating the abbreviations,proper nouns,culture-loaded expressions and technical terms.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,"literal translation with notes" is adopted in translating Chinese abbreviations,transliteration and conventionality are used to translate proper nouns,free translation method is used in translating culture-loaded words,and literal translation method is used in translating technical terms.At last,this report summarizes the translation practice.The report demonstrates that the translator needs to gain an accurate understanding of the connotation of China-specific lexical items and completely conveys the meaning to the target language readers.Besides,parallel texts should be used to achieve more accurate translation.In conclusion,expert knowledge,bilingual competence,a good mastery of translation theories and skills,and professional commitment and devotion are the essentials of a good translator.It is hoped that this report could be of some reference for future C-E translation of CSR reports.
