Nowadays China plays an indispensable role in the international world anddraws the attentions of the people from different countries. The communicationbetween China and the outside world becomes more and more frequent. However, many conflicts and misunderstandings exist in the multicultural world. Thus, effectivecommunication seems particularly more important. We are urgent to make the worldhave a correct and comprehensive understanding of China. Government Work Report(GWR) is very important. It is a kind of official document of the governmentconcerned, which is a widow to let the foreigners know China better. Its Englishversion can help the western countries know China better and resolve unnecessarydisagreements. Therefore, its English version definitely can not be ignored. The thesis studies on Chinese-English (C-E) translation of lexical items withChinese characteristics of GWR based on Nida’s functional equivalence theory. Itapplies Nida’s functional equivalence theory to discuss the English translation skillsand strategies of lexical items with Chinese characteristics in2010-2012GWR.The thesis begins with the general account of this study, including thebackground, the scope and significances, the study methods and innovations and theorganization of the whole thesis. Nida’s functional equivalence theory has exerted atremendous influence on China, even the whole world. His creative translation viewsmake western translation theories more scientific and guide people’s translationactivities to great extent. The thesis is explained just from the perspective of Ndia’sfunctional equivalence theory. The thesis first introduces the literature reviews ofrelevant studies of this theory in western countries and in China, and then thefunctional equivalence theory is completely introduced, including the nature oftranslation defined by Nida, the definition of this theory, the further explanation of it and contributions and criticisms of the theory. Since GWR provides such a platformfor China to communicate with the whole world and exchange information with othercountries, the thesis then talks about the GWR. The structure, functions, styles, characteristics and relevant studies of GWR are explained in this part. The main part of the thesis addresses the English skills and strategies of lexicalitems with Chinese characteristics in2010-2012GWR based on Nida’s functionalequivalence theory. The thesis divides the lexical items with Chinese characteristicsinto several parts, such as the lexical items related with numbers, the lexical itemsrelated with politics, the lexical items related with economy, the lexical items relatedwith people’s wellbeing, the lexical items with four-character expressions and so on.While applying the functional equivalence theory to the English translation of thoselexical items, the translation strategies are explained in detail. The translationstrategies include literal translation, literal translation plus annotation, notes, paraphrase, conversion, addition and others. During the translation, translators shouldfully consider the whole context and then decide what kind of translation strategiescan be employed. Translating problems are also listed in the thesis. Translators shouldovercome the common translation problems of Chinglish, such as mechanicalcounterpart, the incorrect collocation and the lexical redundancy and misuse ofcommendatory and derogatory items. Meanwhile, the translation principles are alsodiscussed in detail. The last part is the conclusion of the whole thesis. Conclusions are made onprevious descriptions and discussions. The implications of the current research areindicated and the limitations of the research are also reflected upon. At last, thesuggestions for further translation studies related the current research are put forward. The thesis is an attempt to share an interest in this field.
