The selected material for this translation practice is the Legacy of Petroleum-Based Economy, which is the first chapter of the book A Sustainable Bioeconomy: The Green Industrial Revolution.First of all,the text analyses in detail petroleum-based economic structure, and then it describes the composition and classification of petroleum, the production and consumption of petroleum, the refining process and its products as well as the prosperity and end of the petroleum era. Finally,it describes the environmental disaster and geopolitical instability caused by the use of fossil fuels, which would deepen the readers' understanding drawbacks of traditional fossil fuels, and increase recognition of the implementation of sustainable bioeconomy. The translation practice analyses the difficulties from lexical and syntactical levels with relevant translation cases.First, plenty of professional terms in petrochemical industry exist in first chapter of the original text,so special attention should be paid to the translation of terms and common words in such scientific text. Some vocabularies cannot be translated word by word, and attention is paid to the conversion of the parts of speech.Second, the passive sentences should be converted to active sentences;the position of attributive clauses in sentences must be considered;long sentences should be split and word order adjusted so as to conform to the Chinese expression habit.Through this practice of translation, the author has gained an understanding of petrochemicals and bioeconomy, which cultivate pragmatic and rigorous attitude. This translation aims to increase the recognition of the implementation of sustainable bioeconomy, and provide a reference to the translation activities of bioeconomy and petroleum.
